Center for the Arts of Greater Lapeer
In 2005 while working as Planning Administrator for the City of Lapeer I had the good fortune to become part of the development team for a City-owned art gallery in our historic downtown. Under the direction and creative vision of Matt Modrack who was Planning Director at the time (and later went on to work for Brighton, MI), the city purchased a building adjacent to the historic PIX Theatre and transformed it into an art gallery with apartments above and classroom space on the lower level.
Over the years I was able to be involved in all facets of the gallery's growth, including its spin-off from a city project into a merger with the PIX into what is now the Center for the Arts of Greater Lapeer. I served on the Board of Directors for the Center, which oversees both facilities, from the time of the merger through October 2018.
My involvement with Gallery 194 re-awakened a long-dormant interest in drawing and painting. I took a variety of art classes through the gallery - beginning with Charcoal Portrait Drawing led by Marnie Fender during the very first class season, which was my first art class since college.
Additional classes over the years have included Studio Oil Painting and en Plein Aire oil painting with Jason Cornish and Miriam Marcus, Pen and Ink Drawing and Watercolor on Aquaboard with Mike Monville, Acrylic Painting with Jacquie Piechowski, and How to Use Your Digital Camera with Dale Vronch, and more. Some of these instructors continue to teach at Gallery 194 and I am honored to consider many of them friends.
Eventually I tried my hand at teaching a few art classes myself - Mandala drawing and painting, Portrait drawing and painting, Introduction to Acrylic Painting, and several Imagination Uncorked classes. Information on new dates will be provided in the CLASSES section of this site. Even though my time as a board member for the Center has ended, I continue to stay involved with events and classes.
In 2019 I joined the Lapeer Art Association (LAA), an artist co-op non-profit organization which has existed in the Lapeer community since 1973. LAA has leased the Upper Gallery of G194 since its beginning, and staffs the gift shop with volunteers. LAA also is involved in various art outreach programs throughout Lapeer County such as operating a youth art camp each summer at Chatfield School, participating in Metamora Country Days, and holiday-themed fundraisers.
